Over the past few months I made this list for fun to show some of my family how Audi (as with most other automobile companies) share engines between models. I also wanted to show that just because two engines may look similar, doesn’t mean they are, they can have drastically different specifications. For instance, the 4.2 V8 in the B7 S4 is similar to the 4.2 in the C6 A6 (albeit tuned differently); however the 4.2 in the B7 RS4 is a whole ’nother animal.
The list started with the B7 A4, S4, and RS4 and I got a bit carried away!
**Some notes**
I’m know the list probably isn't perfect, but this more so just for fun and for having a list right in front of you where it is easy to compare details. Most of the data in here is from the top of my head (ha, I wish), from years of reading about cars in magazines, forums, websites, etc. and of course, I had a bit of help Wikipedia.
The data in this list represents the American versions of these models; however, I included some notable models from the European market, just to compare them (or because I’m envious we didn’t get them in the United States…yes you, C6 RS6). I’d happily add more from other markets later.
For some models I have a side note saying Europe only, I know these models may have also been available in parts of Asia, Latin America, or other countries/continents; I mean no disrespect, I’m just not as knowledgeable about the availability of models in those other countries; but as I learn more, I’ll happily go more in depth about specific markets and which models are offered there.
Also, I didn’t include diesel engines; I plan on adding them at some point.
The horsepower is in brake horsepower, I know that isn’t the only thing that matters, but it’s what I have so far. Initially I was just going to put the engine configuration and displacement but I wanted to add the hp ratings to show that just because it’s the same engine configuration/size doesn’t mean it’s the same power. If anybody has dyno results or wheel horsepower numbers for any of these models that they would like to share, feel free to let me know and I’ll start making a list to add them in the future.
I am aware that my generations (B6, B7, C6, etc.) aren’t perfect and may not match up exactly. This started just as a list for the A/S/RS4 models, then I added the A/S/RS6, and then I figured I’d add pretty much everything else. I tried to fit the generations for different models/chassis’ into a similar time frame when they were using the same engines across different models.
Also I know the T and TT may not match the badging on the car (for instance the I put 4.0TT for the C7 S6 even though the badge on the fender says 4.0T). I’d rather show if it is a single turbo engine vs. a twin/bi-turbo engine than match the badging. However, I kept the T for the supercharged 3.0 V6 engine. I considered writing it as 3.0S or 3.0S/C but I figured that would just make it more confusing, especially mixed in with the S4, too many S’s. However, doing this may have made it more confusing, so I might change it to S/C down the line.
Eventually I’ll add more to this list, make it look a bit nicer, and touch up my grammar (I fall victim to run-on sentences)... I’ll update along the way!
I plan on adding more vehicles, such as Allroad models, SUVs and crossovers. I would also like to add older vehicles, such as the 4000, 5000, and Quattro. On top of that I think it would be fun to include some rally cars, but the engines and power seemed to fluctuate so much race-to-race, so we’ll see. Either way it’d be awesome to compare Audi’s production engines to engines like the crazy inline-5 in the Group-B Quattro that Walter Röhrl drove at Pikes Peak.
I also would like to add more details on the cars/engines later, such as lb-ft torque, whp, quarter mile times, 0-60 times, weight, drivetrain (for the few FWD cars and the RWD R8 V10 RWS), top speed (restricted and unrestricted), differentiate more on body styles (Avant, Cabrio, coupe, saloon/sedan, etc.), and mention if it was produced at quattro GmbH / Audi Sport Gmbh.
At some point I might color code the engines or something along those lines... I mean the initial reason I made this list was to show how different models share engines (although with slightly different tunes/internals) so it would be helpful to have the similar engines to stand out.
Finally, I am not perfect, and I whipped this together pretty quickly last night. I know I can clean it up a bit, and there may be some mistakes, feel free to let me know as I am open to constructive criticism.

The 2021 Volvo V90 Cross Country is an achingly pretty wagon, with a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, plenty of ground clearance and cargo space for days. It also offers decent fuel economy and one of the best interiors in the luxury space. Why buy another SUV when you could have this instead?

The V90 Cross Country is powered by the T6 version of Volvo’s ubiquitous four-cylinder engine, bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In this case, the 2.0-liter I4 has both a supercharger and a turbocharger, and produces a healthy 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It’s not the sweetest-sounding or smoothest engine around, but it works well and returns an EPA-estimated 20 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg combined — numbers that I found easy to achieve, even with the additional aerodynamic drag of a roof box.
Acceleration in the Cross Country is brisk, thanks to the low-end torque afforded by the twin-charged engine, though it tends to run out of steam at higher revs. As with most Volvos, the engine lacks drama for better or worse, designed to just get you where you need to go. The eight-speed automatic transmission never huts for gears and shifts at appropriate places, so it also largely fades into the background.
The V90 Cross Country is a luxury car at its core and the way it drives reflects that. The optional ($1,200) Four-C adaptive air suspension is excellent, isolating passengers from all but the gnarliest road imperfections, but not so much that the V90 feels disconnected from the road. The steering is direct but not terribly communicative, and the brakes are excellent, exhibiting no discernible fade even on long, fast descents down mountain roads. Overall, the V90 Cross Country isn’t what I’d call exciting to drive, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s damn comfortable and super easy to live with — just like any good luxury car should be.
The V90 is a little old, but it still offers first-rate safety tech. Volvo’s City Safety suite of systems is standard on every V90 Cross Country, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera and more. These, combined with Volvo’s strong chassis design, are enough to net the brand nine IIHS safety awards.
The V90’s interior is comfortable and beautifully designed.

Volvo definitely knows how to make a nice interior, and the V90 Cross Country’s cabin is stellar. Volvo’s seats have historically been some of the best in the business, offering excellent comfort even after hours on the road, and that’s absolutely true with the V90. These chairs are extremely supportive and adjustable, and clad in soft perforated leather. The seats in my tester are heated and cooled and offer massage functionality, as well. In short, they’re ace.
The rest of the interior is thoughtfully laid out, with all controls within easy reach and simple to use. Volvo also deserves bonus points here for the unique finish on the various knobs and wheels, which is not only attractive to look at, but feels nice under your fingers. The rest of the interior continues along that line, with great attention to detail and little bits of flair, making it feel like something truly special compared to the often staid cabins of German luxury automakers.
Volvo’s Sensus infotainment tech is acceptable, and attractive, but this system that seemed so forward-thinking just a few years ago now feels somewhat dated. The 9-inch touchscreen offers quicker response times than before and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but I can’t wait for Volvo to integrate its new Android Automotive tech into its full lineup. This is the system you’ll find in the new Polestar 2, and it’s great.
This Sensus system is starting to show its age.

One of the V90’s highlights is the Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo system. Normally, I’m fairly indifferent to B&W systems, but here, you get the option to digitally change the listening environment. It might seem like a gimmick, but the Gothenburg Concert Hall setting is genuinely fantastic and adds a lot to the listening experience. For audiophiles like me, this is a huge win.
Being a luxury car, the V90 Cross Country isn’t cheap. But compared to a lot of similarly equipped luxury SUVs — including Volvo’s own XC90 — it’s a little less expensive. The V90 Cross Country starts at $56,690 including $1,095 for destination, and my well-equipped test vehicle has a sticker price of $67,740. Given the way the Cross Country looks, feels and drives, that price is reasonable.
This or an SUV? Definitely this.

This Volvo’s closest competitors are the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain, and while the V90 holds its own, the Germans out-perform it in a few key ways. The V90 has a maximum cargo capacity of 53.9 cubic feet, while the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain offer about 64. The Volvo is also down on power compared to the two Germans, which use mild-hybrid setups; the Audi offers 335 hp and 369 lb-ft, while the Mercedes brings 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. Audi and Mercedes offer much better cabin tech, too.
Even so, the Volvo is just as nice to drive, every bit as comfortable and arguably better to look at. These competitors might be newer, but I’d still have the V90 over both. This wagon offers everything you’d ask from a two-row SUV, save for an elevated driving position and maybe some towing capability (the Cross Country can still pull 3,500 pounds, however). It’s comfortable, spacious, handsome and easy to live with. SUV drivers don’t know what they’re missing.

Mercedes-2022 class C sedan
Between the new S-class and the upcoming EQS electric car, some people may think that Mercedes Benz has not given the C-class the attention it deserves. Even in the difficult times caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the "three pointed star" is still in the final testing phase of W206.
Recently, a prototype car about to be mass produced has been exposed on the streets of Germany, showing a new generation of C-class sedan only disguised in the front and rear of the car. While BMW's questionable new grille design has shocked the world, don't expect Mercedes to introduce a controversial design into the next generation of its best-selling cars.
Obviously, the design team will use the next generation C to keep it safe, with a little sharpening in the front end and adding a horizontal tail light to the trunk. Overall, we get the impression of a mini S-class, although we hope Mercedes will prove us wrong when camouflage some time next year.
In terms of interior, the current w205 is starting to feel a bit out of date, with its infotainment display sticking out of the dashboard. Previous spy photos have shown that mbux will be cleverly integrated into the central console, but it will not be the fancy setting we see in the new S-level. The touch screen will be significantly smaller and will have touch buttons for climate control functions.
According to reports, Mercedes will only install a four cylinder engine, with some major changes planned under the hood. Yes, it has been reported that AMG C43 has lost its six cylinders and replaced it with AMG C53's four cylinder electric four cylinder mill, and AMG C63 can also be reduced to a hybrid four cylinder mill.
On other fronts, Mercedes is expected to fully electric its engine lineup and offer plug-in hybrid systems to avoid paying fines in Europe, where emission regulations are increasingly stringent. The car will soon be followed by a more practical model, which may eventually spawn the long rumored all terrain model to chase the Audi A4 allroad.

Jaguar Land Rover is trying to get a US import ban on SUVs from several Volkswagen-owned brands, including those made by Porsche, Audi and Lamborghini. The British automaker alleges they’re infringing a patent that covers its Terrain Response tech.
The automaker claims the feature is one of the things that make its Land Rover Discovery and Jaguar F-Pace SUVs stand out against their competitors. It allows those SUVs to maintain traction on any surface thanks to a system that electronically controls the engine, transmission and brakes. Additionally, it says it put in a lot of time and effort into creating the technology, going so far as to footprint more than 50 different surfaces during the development process.
“JLR seeks to protect itself and its United States operations from companies that have injected infringing products into the U.S. market that incorporate, without any license from JLR, technology developed by JLR and protected by its patent,” the automarker says in its filing with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
Jaguar is asking the agency to block imports of the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini Urus and Volkswagen Tiguan. It doesn’t want to see Audi Q8, Q7, Q5, A6 Allroad and e-tron vehicles entering the US either. As Bloomberg points outs, Volkswagen depends on the margins it makes off those high-end cars to fund its investments in EVs and autonomous cars. We’ve reached out to Volkswagen for comment, and we’ll update this article when we hear back from the company.
Typically, it takes the ITC about 15 to 18 months to complete an investigation. While the agency can stop products from entering the US, it doesn’t have the power to award damages to a company — which is why Jaguar Land Rover has filed claims in federal courts in Delaware and New Jersey, as well.
Update (4:49 PM ET): Volkswagen has responded. “The Volkswagen Group is examining the action in order to determine further steps,” a spokesperson for the company told Engadget. “We will not comment any further regarding an ongoing proceeding at this stage.”
